Assignment
This week, go out and take new photos that capture depth or layers. Post 1 photo to this thread and leave constructive feedback on at least 3 other photos.
Purpose
In this assignment you are trying to create “extreme depth” – in the sense that you want to shoot a street photograph with the following: a subject really close to you in the foreground, someone in the middle-ground, and someone far away in the background. You can do this assignment by doing the following: pre-focus your lens to 5–10 meters, find someone who isn’t moving around much in the middleground and background, and try to add an out-of-focus face in your extreme foreground. This will help you create more depth in your photographs and more visual complexity.
Nowadays in street photography, it is popular to add lots of layers, subjects, and complexity to your frame. Yet, sometimes we fall victim to this aesthetic— we add layers for layers sake. I feel what we should strive in street photography is this — seek emotional layers to our photos. To have emotional depth. To have emotional complexity.
Don’t think of composition for composition sake. Think of how you can add more depth in terms of emotion, feelings, and psychology.
How do your photos make your viewer feel? What emotional impact will your photos have in the heart of your viewer?
Add more soul to your images, and your images will live in the heart of your viewer forever.
