A reminder that (on behalf of HAPTIC as a thank you for your awesome work) we will award two grand prizes for submissions to STREET CLUB. We will announce the two grand prize winners in the last assignment review video. Submit to the last assignment and leave constructive feedback to increase your chances of winning!

Best photo submitted during STREET CLUB will receive the limited edition VITRUVIAN CAMERA by Annette Kim.

VITRUVIAN CAMERA is ARTWEAR — to inspire yourself everyday, to pay homage to the artistic masters of the past, and to also pave your own path in photography. VITRUVIAN CAMERA is an original artwork hand sketched by Annette Kim. Inspired by Leonardo da Vinci’s Vitruvian Man, Annette researched the history and science of camera design in order to produce this conceptual camera.

WEEK 6 ASSIGNMENT: DEPTH/LAYERS

How to shoot layers:

How to Capture Emotional Layers in Street Photography
How to Shoot Layers in Street Photography

Assignment
This week, go out and take new photos that capture depth or layers. Post 1 photo to this thread and leave constructive feedback on at least 3 other photos.
Purpose
In this assignment you are trying to create “extreme depth” – in the sense that you want to shoot a street photograph with the following: a subject really close to you in the foreground, someone in the middle-ground, and someone far away in the background. You can do this assignment by doing the following: pre-focus your lens to 5–10 meters, find someone who isn’t moving around much in the middleground and background, and try to add an out-of-focus face in your extreme foreground. This will help you create more depth in your photographs and more visual complexity.

Nowadays in street photography, it is popular to add lots of layers, subjects, and complexity to your frame. Yet, sometimes we fall victim to this aesthetic— we add layers for layers sake. I feel what we should strive in street photography is this — seek emotional layers to our photos. To have emotional depth. To have emotional complexity.

Don’t think of composition for composition sake. Think of how you can add more depth in terms of emotion, feelings, and psychology.

How do your photos make your viewer feel? What emotional impact will your photos have in the heart of your viewer?

Add more soul to your images, and your images will live in the heart of your viewer forever.

Eric and I will be on the road working on new projects with HAPTICLABS in Japan, but we will leave a video review on Sunday August 20 (Japan time).
