HOW TO BUILD WILLPOWER

VITRUVIAN CAMERA ARTWEAR by ANNETTE KIM

Dear friend,

If you have a hard time motivating yourself to get shit done that you want to do, some practical tips and advice for you:

One.

First, do your creative work in the morning. I find it impossible to motivate myself to work on creative work after being drained from the day.

I have a hard time waking up. But it’s easiest to wake up early, if you sleep early.

Sleep early by putting your phone in another room in the evening (not in your bedroom). Read books on Kindle, read paperbacks. Use an analog old school alarm to wake you up an hour earlier than you normally do in the morning.

Another tip: don’t drink alcohol in the evenings to sleep better.

Takeaway: Easier to sleep early than to force yourself to wake up early, and be tired.

Two. Drink more coffee or tea

Second, I honestly only get motivated to do creative work with coffee.

Drink more black coffee, no sugar. Stick to single espressos for less caffeine.

If you really want a wake me up in the mornings, drink cold brew. Google on how to make it at home.

For myself, I still sleep poorly. For optimal sleep, I try to stop coffee after 3pm.

Three. Be motivated to help others.

For me I feel the most willpower in helping others.

If I would have nobody to help, I would not be motivated to write, teach, make videos, or blog.

Ask yourself:

What kind of difference do I want to make in the world? What kind of legacy do I wanna leave behind after I die?

Four. Push your limits (for fun)

For me, I push my limits because to be complacent is boring.

I find willpower in trying to overcome my past self. A competition against ERIC from a week ago.

When I Deadlift, I try to increase my weight by 5 pounds each week. The excitement of possibly increasing my “1 rep max” ascites and motivates me.

To wake up every morning to do new and innovative creative work drives me.

Five. Personally meaningful work

And lastly, I build willpower by doing personally meaningful work.

To empower photographers with information. To empower street photographers to conquer their fears. To help other photographers start their own business.

Ask yourself:

What personally meaningful work do I do, that uplifts my soul?
