You Are Defined By the Photos You Make

Dear friend,

Don’t think or worry too much about your style, direction, or definition of photography.

Rather, just think that you’re defined by the photos you make.

1. What do you like to photograph?

First of all, look at all the photos you make. What photos do you make?

Do you make a lot of photos of your breakfast cappuccino? You’re a coffee photographer.

Do you make a lot of photos of what you eat? Then you’re a food photographer.

Do you photograph your friends and loved ones? Then you’re a personal photographer.

Do you make a lot of photos of strangers? Then you’re a street photographer.

2. First, make photos. Secondly, figure out your style

Look at your photos, then figure out what photographer you are.

Don’t think of what kind of photographer you want to be, then go out and try to become that type of photographer.

Follow your gut, and photograph whatever interests you.

3. Categorize your photos

Go to your archive of photos, and just identify what you like to photograph. You can tag your photos, export them as JPEG in different folders on your computer, or print your favorite photos as small 4×6 prints and put them into different boxes.

4. Photograph anything that interests you

Ultimately, just follow your gut. Photograph whatever interests you, and figure out your “style” or “branding” afterwards.

Don’t let nobody tell you how to photograph. There are no rules in photography. Only tips, advice, and suggestions. Follow your own rules.

Have fun,
Eric
