Street Photography Quick Links: December 2015

SPQL DEC 2015

Street Photography Quick Links is a compilation of Links, Projects, News, Videos, Events, or anything that is related to street photography or photography in particular that I have personally consumed. Perhaps these might interest you or make you think. If you want to send some links my way, details will be at the bottom of the post below:

Portfolio Find

Pascal Vossen

There is always room in the world for a good documentary photography narrative. His work, The nail that sticks up will be hammered down takes a surgical look at the clash between Japan’s idea of collectivism and the western or perhaps modern idea of individualism. The photographs are executed with such cleanliness. It shows cliches that you will see in Japan such as Kimonos and Salary Men but what elevates the work is the flow and relationship of each of the pictures. The color palette lacks vibrancy despite seeing different colors in the images. Overall, it is a well executed work.

Take a look at his Singles work as well. A mixture of quirky and colorful street photographs from different places and festivals. Fans of humorous street photography would love it.

Collective Find

Insight Collective

The latest collective to come out of South Asia. Muhammad Imam Hasan, Faisal Bin Rahman Shuvo, and Md. Enamul Kabir are hard workers and straight shooters. I suggest to follow their work closely because you might see those names more in the future.

and the winners are by Marc Feustel and Laurence Vecten

To celebrate the festive season with all its “best photobooks of 2015″ lists, we decided to compile all the books that were featured on these lists in one place: And the winners are…

Photobooks 2015 by Phot(o)lia

Photolia lists down all the best photobooks list into one list. #Listception

At least 43 photobook lists came out last December.

Shoji Ueda: The Most Beautiful, Surprising, Photobook of the year via The Guardian

He often appears in the series as a kind of clownish director, either alone or with his wife. This is photography about directorial control, and the black and white shots are stills from a film that only ever happened in Ueda’s head.

An Inventively Designed Photo Book (That You Can Read) via NYTimes

A quick look at Gus Powell’s The Lonely Ones. If you’re a fan of photo books, add this to your to list!

Photographer Movie

Sawdust and Sand: The Art of Douglas Miller

Doulas Miller is a Laguna beach figure having photographed the place for the greater part of his life having more than 150,000 shots in a 40+++ year span. Watch and see how this renaissance man works.

Paris Photo Aftermath

Marlio da Silva shares to me his Paris Photo set

This one is a community submission. What happened in Paris is a travesty but the only way for places and festivals like Paris photo to get back up is to continue to support it.

Paris is for Photographers via Phototelling

This one is debunking the myth that Paris is not a photo friendly city. With the right approach and sincerity, you can photograph anything.

General Links

Giving up is the enemy of creativity via Harvard Business Review

Remember that creative problems are supposed to feel difficult. Most involve setbacks, failures, and that “stuck” feeling. It’s part of the process. Suppress your instinct to interpret these feelings as a signal that you just aren’t creative or that you’ve run out of good ideas. Reaching your creative potential often takes time, and persistence is critical for seeing a challenge through to the end.

Photographer Discovers ISIS Has Stolen His Artwork via Hyperallergic

What would you do if ISIS stole your image?

The Best Street Photographer In San Francisco 2015: Troy Holden via Vantage

Not a big fan of the link bait article and I also think it is not a competition but yes, Troy Holden is the bees knees. He really is good. Heck there’s probably something in the waters of San Francisco that makes the city pump out talented shooters because he’s not just the only one that’s good.

One Year of Art Gallery Press Releases, Analyzed via Artnet News

So they collected all the words mostly used in art exhibition press releases. Interesting results came out.
