Video Interview with Sion Fullana, NYC Street Photographer from The Mobile Photo Group

1x1.trans Video Interview with Sion Fullana, NYC Street Photographer from The Mobile Photo Group

In New York, I was very pleased to meet up with Sion Fullana, a journalist, film-maker, and street photographer based here. He is originally from Spain, and once coming to the city (and getting an iPhone 3G as a present from Anton Kawasaki)–he started hitting the streets and shooting. After several popular photos he published (including the kiss in Times Square–which was shot with a point-and-shoot), his visibility skyrocketed on the internet. He is also very active on Instagram, and is one of the members of The Mobile Photo Group.

Sion is an incredibly down-to-earth guy — check out the interview to find out more about his beginnings and how he discovered street photography through his mobile device!

* Apologies for the noisy background — am using an external microphone on my iPad to make the interview louder (but the ambient sound is much louder too!)

Hell yeah! Stoked to see my brother Sion getting some shine on here. He and Anton are two of my personal faves – both well rounded, passionate and thoughtful artists, and I’m proud to call them friends, too. NY to SF connect! Respect…

Sion Fullana is one of the most inspiring visual story-teller I have the privilege to know. I am not saying this because he is a wonderful person and one of my best friends. Fact is that each and every one of Sion’s images, which he usually captions with beautiful words, touches my soul. He has a a very unique, spontaneous and superbly sharp eye for composition, sense of color, and editorial relevance. I absolutely love his work and I am certain he is rapidly becoming an iconic new reference in the world of photography. Thank you to Eric Kim for featuring him here !

To isolate the sound from the person speaking you need a directional mono mic. That should help a lot.

Thanks for the suggestion Erik! I got one one my GoPro- but people complained that it was mono? Your thoughts?

  • Daniel

Proof that you don’t need a fancy camera. You need to have a vision.

I have pretty much the same way of holding the iPhone when taking pictures, but in the beginning I found the stretch a little uncomfortable and the iPhone not secure enough in my hand. Ifind that taking an old broken charger cable, plugging it into the phone and then cutting off the cable part gives me just a more secure grip. I even – and how sad is this – painted it black so as to not make it too obvious. A tip for Sion ( ;-) , oooooh, the cheek of it!) @zerozero31 on instagram!

Wow this guy’s work is phenomenal! I’m definitely gonna follow him.
