INTERESTED IN DEVELOPING AND EXECUTING YOUR UNIQUE STREET PHOTOGRAPHY PROJECT?
I’m really excited to announce the first of the EKSP Workshops taught exclusively by my close friend and colleague Charlie Kirk (two cute dogs) with special guest speaker Fabrizio Quagliuso (fabuchan). Charlie has taught at two of my previous workshops and has received considerable praise from students. I am extremely confident that students will learn a great deal from him as he’s one of the most passionate and knowledgeable street photographers I know.
This will be an intensive two-day workshop April 21st and 22nd in London focusing on developing and executing short and long term photography projects. While the course is open to photographers of any ability, we suggest that intermediate photographers looking to advance to the next level would benefit most from this course.
Workshop Overview
On the first day, we will all be meeting together and introducing ourselves to one another over breakfast and coffee. Afterwards, we will review five images from each participant, identifying the strengths and weaknesses in our work, as well as what we can improve on. This part of the course will help students’ visual literacy and provide a firm foundation in composition.
Fabrizio Quagliuso will discuss his “160 Yen” project, describing the process that led to his idea and outlining the approach he took during the execution and editing steps. Fabrizio completed his project in just over a month, and it’s an incredible piece of work considering the time frame he took it in. I feel students will be inspired by his commitment and vision.
Charlie Kirk will then lead a presentation on shooting street photography projects and essays, focusing on participants’ own style and voice. The group will study in-depth the work of famous Magnum and contemporary street photographers.
On the second day, we will meet in the morning to continue shooting for our mini-project. After shooting, students will review, edit, and process select images from their mini-project with the group and there will be in-depth discussion of our successes and challenges encountered while shooting the project.
The rest of the workshop will be spent focusing on future project ideas with each student. These projects will be reviewed by the instructor in six months’/one year’s time and the best project will be profiled on Eric Kim Street Photography Blog! Charlie and Fabrizio will also be available to answer any questions during the course of the year.
Workshop Syllabus: What we will cover
Not only will you be able to identify what makes the work of Magnum and other contemporary street photographers special, you will have the chance to critique and be critiqued on your own work. By doing so, you can identify your strengths and weaknesses that will assist you in developing and executing your own short and long term street photography projects; ones that truly reflect your individual style and voice.
On both days you will have the opportunity to apply what you learned by working on a mini street photography project, identifying images that work well together for a series. While shooting the streets, you will also receive hands-on on guidance from Charlie and/or Fabrizio that will enable you to both prepare for and capture the ‘decisive moment‘.
As a special incentive for students to continue with their long term projects, Charlie and Fabrizio will review project submissions from the students with the winner being profiled on Eric Kim Street Photography Blog!
What you will get out of this workshop
After attending this workshop, you will be armed with the knowledge and confidence it takes to develop and execute your own short and long term street photography projects. You will know not only what makes a great image, but what makes a compelling series of images.
The progress of your long term street photography project will be monitored by your instructor Charlie Kirk and he will choose the successful project that will be featured on the Eric Kim Street Photography blog! Remember, this is not just a street photography workshop. It is a chance to build a community of friends and passionate street photographers that will last far after the workshop is over.

Instructor Biographies
Charlie Kirk
Charlie Kirk describes himself as “a 37-year-old English guy, formerly working as a lawyer in Tokyo.” Based in Japan’s capitol for 9 years before recently moving to London, he was educated at Sussex, Cambridge and Nottingham, and notes wryly “It’s a long process to become a lawyer.” A talented and avidly committed photographer with a knack for capturing the surreal quality of everyday life with his Leica MP and M9, he hopes to turn his newfound photographic passion into something more than a fulfilling avocation. He is also quite known to use flash in his work.
You can see some of Charlie’s Work on his Flickr or watch his documentary.
Fabrizio Quagliuso
Fabrizio was born in Italy. After graduating from university, he left Italy and currently lives in London (UK). Fabrizio has always been passionate about visual arts, and photography in particular. For the past five years he has totally devoted himself to street photography, a passion that stemmed from his natural curiosity and his fondness for observing life unfolding around him.
Fabrizio’s photographs and writings have been featured on numerous photography magazines in UK, Italy, Japan and China, prestigious online blogs and his “Shine on Japan” work has been exhibited in various events in London and in Italy and has participated to various charity activities. You can connect with him on Flickr, Google+, or Facebook.
