    Charlie is FAST!

Oh yeah-I was surprised how quick he was! Kinda like a mix between a boxer and ballerina..

Sorry to hear you got your butt kicked and your flash destroyed.

I took a couple of shots downtown in Hamburg lately and a guy walks up to me (I didn’t even take his picture) and the shouts at me from nowhere: ‘Did you take my picture asshole?!’

      No worries mate.

As for that guy in Hamburg, you should smile and say “yes” ;)

Eric, the GoPro footage is really fun, and the way you shadowed Charlie definitely sheds a little light on the twinkle toes required for the pictures he makes. Pretty crappy to have your flash destroyed like that. Was that the large Yongnuo one? Anyway, you mentioned you were given a new one – is it largely the same or quite different in use? And another tedious gear question (sorry! I’m looking for something to deal with the godforsaken greyness where I am) – any idea what the neat little hot-shoe flash Charlie was using is? I suppose it gives a more direct flash look than the off-camera Nikon SB-900 he uses? Just seeing a few minutes of footage, it did seem like he was shooting vertically a lot more than his flickr stream hints at, but yeah, it was just a few minutes. Thanks, Eric, and thanks, Charlie.

+1 on knowing what flash Charlie was using. I usually go with my 580EXII but a little shoe mounted flash would be nice on occasion. Be a pal and let us know. Arigato!

It’s a Leica 24D. I use on camera flash when it’s raining as I don’t want to ruin my triggers or more expensive Nikon flash.

First, I really like the video, sheds light on charlie’s and tokyo street photo style. I would like to see more footage like that – from you next locations maybe?:)

Second, concerning said charlie’s style, it does seem like great fun but isn’t it a bit too technical? I mean, where is the soul of photography? where is the looking through the viewfinder, focusing on something, composing the image? everyone can shoot a camera like a gun at people . If charlie’s style there shown in the video is balanced with some old fashioned photo taking style then I have no reservations. But if this is “real” street photography then I’m real disappointed.

Dan – I look through the viewfinder 90% of the time. It’s only where I can’t get my head to the shot will I not do so. I am composing, but it needs to be done quickly given the close proximity I shoot at. Try giving this a go and see what images you get. It’s much harder than it seems.

        Hi Charlie, thanks for answering.

I of course did not mean any disrespect to your photography skills or the “fast draw” style shown in the video. I follow your shots on flickr and really like your style and results displayed there(I wish for myself shots like that), getting these results – especially with film – is not trivial to me.

My inquiry was in reference to this specific video clip which I now understand is not the whole picture concerning street photography – as you and eric see it, and to that I can totally relate to. I see no problem in mixing styles – composing & “drawing” as you do – That’s fine by me. In this particular clip it just looked like pulling teeth out which IMHO isn’t (in my eyes of course) the essence of photography as whole and SP in particular. That is the only point I wanted to clarify with you and I now understand that it is just partly how to shoot.

        Thanks

        -Dan

If I didn’t take pictures in the street before, my judgment would be that you guys are assholes. I like how each person has their style and it shows in their images. This is really well done. Moar!
