Whose images are your favorite? Let us know by leaving a comment below! (and yes, we all got a photo of that smiling woman!)

  • Kathy Cadigan

    DavitR’s “Jesus loves you”

  • Miriam

The lady’s legs and little black Scotty dog. Excellent!

  • http://www.boliston.co.uk Adrian Boliston

I’d vote for Becker – shot of 2 girls with sunglasses

  • http://www.facebook.com/Pol.mm Pablo Leonardo Galicer

David Scott’s are my favorites. Specialy the kissing couple

  • Ethan

    love the kissing couple shot!

  • LaurenTurtonPhotography

love the kissing couple and the tightly cropped image of the lady holding the smile.

Your black and white pictures looks great! It inspired me to take outdoor pictures too using that feature in my camera.

Justin Chuan’s 4th is the only one that really stood out to me.
The kiss is a close 2nd.

The kid in the t-shirt? Chuan’s one of the smiling lady stood out most for me in his work.

    • http://erickimphotography.com/blog Eric Kim

Both are fantastic– my favorite is the kiss though ;)

Michael Rickey’s man playing guitar stood out for me, as did some of the shots of the woman holding the image of the sign. I also liked the shot of the man in the car by John Becker.

I’d love to take part in these sessions (they look interesting) but I’m nowhere near them.

I’d hate to see the rejects. I mean really, so many wandering around with 1$10,000.00 + in Leica equipment and this is what they get? Their money would be better spent in a few formal workshops.

Sorry, don’t mean to an ass, but this is not my idea of “street photography”.

    • Mark Tracey

No you’re not an ass but I think that your comments are a bit harsh for a few reasons.

      1) You don’t know their photography experience to date… This was an ‘intro’ to street photography so I would assume its people’s first attempt at the genre.
      2) ‘No’ workshop will make you the next great street photographer but what it will give you is
the building blocks and inspiration to work towards your own personal goals in this area.
      3) What is your idea of street photography (for those new to street of course as thats what the workshop is for…) ?
      4) The price of equipment is irrelevant as I’m sure you know :)

      • Mvreal

        Valid points, Mark, but…

1). But even presented as a “beginners’ experience, most of these images lack any notion of the “decisive moment”.

2.) A workshop won’t teach you anything if you don’t want to learn…and more importantly..,actually apply what you learned. What I’m seeing here is poor framing, poor exposure, and apertures that are not optimal. My suggestion of a workshop, or an extended course, may help with this.

3,) My idea of street photography is that it contain a true “decisive moment”. I don’t see that anywhere here. Pictures of a saxophone and a hat in the window are throwaways in this genre.

4.) The price of equipment is indeed irrelevant. In this case I believe the M9 owners truly expect that ownership of this camera will instill Cartier-Bresson-like qualities to their images. But, hey, it’s their money and they can spend it as they like.

Like I said, I don’t mean to be harsh or rude, but what are we doing here…promoting mediocre and poor photography…trying to pass it off as something special?

        • http://erickimphotography.com/blog Eric Kim

          Dear MV,

Thank you for your feedback but I also find your critique to be a bit harsh. This was an intro workshop, with many people still learning about photography. I think that the images they produced from the first day of the workshop were very impressive considering many of them were very new to street photography and also a bit timid to shoot strangers.

My participants go close, mustered up their courage, framed their subjects well, and also interacted when on the streets. As you also well know, it is very difficult to capture the decisive moment on only a weekend of shooting. Even I am lucky if I can get 1-2 shots in a weekend.

As Mark also mentioned this workshop is a starting point to become more inspired to go out and learn some of the building blocks as well. As Henri Cartier-Bresson said himself, your first 10,000 photos are your worst!

  • Mark Tracey

Its always hard to pick favourites and even then its subjective. I’m intrigued by Jia Yu’s 3rd shot. Imho, its seems to be a moment of contemplation captured where the subject is for perhaps just a second in another world, away from the hustle that surrounds her.
