Street Photography POV at Venice Beach with a GoPro HD

by Eric Kim on July 18, 2011

Many of you guys loved watching my Leica M9 POV video as well as my Leica M9 Viewfinder video so I decided to make another one (this time editing in shots!) I also tried adding in a soundtrack (RJD2 Ghostwriter) to make the video more upbeat and fun. Sorry if my voice is a bit muffled in the video, as I’m still new to video editing and I’m getting the hang of it :)

Hope you enjoy the video! Read more to see the images I took.

So what kind of video do you want me to record next and how should I change it? Let me know your thoughts by leaving a comment below!

  • Jon Savage

Nice walk around Venice Eric- Thanks for sharing it.

  • Phil

You got some great captures at Venice Beach, Eric! I really enjoy watching these videos of your street shooting – hope you do a lot more! Cheers.

  • http://martoscbox.wordpress.com/ Martosc, [Gm]

3:35… Wooo, that was close :D…

Love the video :-)… love the results too. Looking at the video, I see some other scenes that would interest me to shoot (that you didn’t take), that tells us how people perspectives are different, yes?

  • Travis Truman

I think this video works much better than the last one. Soundtrack is great and its nice to see the shots edited in. Great job!

My favorite shot of the bunch is the young girl with the hot glue gun, closely followed by the third shot of the skateboarder that lost his board.

    • Tom G.

that was my favorite shot as well, I thought it was very random that she had a hot glue gun on the street.

Thanks for sharing great insights into your craft, I enjoyed watching it thoroughly. Keep up the great work Eric.

Loved the shots of all the birds on the ground and wires. I also thought the dude dancing was a sure bet. Why did you skip him?

  • Pierre E

Thanks for taking the time to edit all this in order to make this kind of video!

I was in LA a few months ago, brings a lot of nice memories back!

I really liked the triptych of the skateboarder, especially since the last shot is pretty dramatic! The ones of the tatooed guys are pretty cool as well.

    Keep up the good work!

  • Weilun

Hey Eric, this is just my personal point of view after watching the video, I think it is pretty evident that skateboard dude had deliberately flung his skateboard at you…

  • Jose astrain

EXELENTE HERMANO, buen video!!!..but what happened with the LEICA GEAR????…congrats from mexico, in ur new journey as a full time “fotografo callejero” (street photographer)..

    • http://erickimphotography.com/blog Eric Kim

      Muchas gracias amigo!

  • Kyle Batson

You’re very smooth, man. :) What focal length were you using? There’s definitely a different feel with these than when you were using the 35mm with the Leica.

    • http://erickimphotography.com/blog Eric Kim

      35mm–gonna start shooting 24mm now though ;D

The music was great for this video. It was a nice touch to hear the clicks of the camera and then to see what you actually photographed interspersed. Near miss by the skateboard was a wow though I would gather he had enough control to direct it and it was probably intentional looking at his expression. Accident or intent he gave you a cool shot. The only thing I wanted to see here that I didn’t get to see via your video was what that large group of people were looking at. If it was a smaller group I wouldn’t have been interested but because you sifted for quite a while through them.. the curiosity was there.

    • http://erickimphotography.com/blog Eric Kim

Thanks for the feedback ISO! As for that large group, it was just a street performer–nothing too interesting :D

  • joe rocco

yeah … skateboard dude is a douche. I’ve seen him before and he always has attitude. He definitely meant to do that … you can see in image two he is in perfect balance and not looking at anything except the target of his board (you).

And he wouldn’t have even felt bad if it had hit you. Such a shame there are people like this out there.

Anyway … glad you didn’t get hit.

I do like this format of video … always insert the actual photos … adds so much value.

I agree with Martosc … i saw a lot of images also. It is great that we all have such different views of the world.

Good job man … keep it up.

    • http://erickimphotography.com/blog Eric Kim

Actually I did get hit with the skateboard (in the shin). If anything, it makes the video more interesting ;D

I reckon you should file an injury claim – you could be getting the M9 a lot sooner ;-)

        • http://www.erickimphotography.com Eric Kim

          I wish ;)

  • Cindy

wow eric, this is awesome!!!!! good job with the editing, especially if this was your first one :)

    • http://erickimphotography.com/blog Eric Kim

Well I learn from the greatest :D

  • Ewanglee

Love this video. Has a sense of local street. You’ve captured the flavor of Venice. Like the como of music and live sound. Photos came out great. Yes, the insert of photos give insight to your hoice of shot making. Keep it coming.

  • Kevin

Cool video Eric. Maybe next time you should get a videographer to follow you around. Similar to Bruce Gildens video that you posted. POV’s are cool, but can get pretty played if you over do it.

    • http://erickimphotography.com/blog Eric Kim

Then you will like my new video coming up — shooting street photos in Hollywood with a flash ;D

  • Andrew

Great video. Did you compliment that guy on his icecream?

    • http://erickimphotography.com/blog Eric Kim

Haha yes. As Thomas Leuthard says, “A bad excuse is better than no excuse”

  • Angel

Una serie fantástica. El skate estuvo muy cerca de tu cuerpo.
    Cordiales saludos

  • Andy

Love this! Great with pov, and with the images inserted. The music was nice also! Wanted to hear the conversation with the tattoo guys a little better though. Great job man! :)

    • http://erickimphotography.com/blog Eric Kim

Will edit it better next time Andy :D

  • Pennuja

Awesome video keep up the good work!

    • http://erickimphotography.com/blog Eric Kim

      Huge thanks Gaz!

The third skateboard pic is simply awesome. His expression adds so much to it.
Please upload it to flickr so I can favorite it :)

    • http://www.erickimphotography.com Eric Kim

UPLOADED via your request Henning :)

  • http://zenowatson.com/ Zeno Watson

I really enjoyed this clip Eric!
Your confidence is growing, your minds eye is improving and your instinct is sharpening up nicely!

Have you thought about taping up the blinking LED, or turning the blink function off?

Keep up the great work and energy, I will support you in buying a T-shirt, when i get back home from my travel.

  • Laurisaksa

Hey Erik, really nice vido. It really makes a difference when you insert the images you took. Some nice shots as well. But my favourite one is the one of the skateboard hitting you, the third one in that sequence. The music also fits in really well. Looking forward to seeing more!

  • Anonymous

Great video. Love how you engage your subjects.

Eric, how do you deal with awkward moments such as the one where the big asian guy didn’t want to get photographed? I felt extremely uncomfortable just watching that sequence from my couch… so how do you deal with it in your head? Just move on?

  • Rickprokosch

Awesome vid, man. Having the photos inserted is the icing on the cake. I thoroughly enjoy these!

  • Gary Gumanow

Hate to tell you this, but that skater threw his board at you. I’ve had the same thing happen when they don’t want photographers around. I was a skater as a teenager. That kid didn’t miss on purpose.

  • Nate Lawson

That was the best one yet. The skateboarder launching his board at you is my favorite! The look on his face in the third image is classic!!

Appreciate the video. At 1:35 in the video was a great opportunity–the guy was kinda dancing around and was totally just doing his thing.

awesome shots were they shot in BnW directly or converted through post-processing?
