Myself and Bruce Gilden at the Leica Magnum Paris Event. My hero!

Today was one hell of a day. It was the official Leica Magnum Paris event, and I was able to attend as a VIP attendee. I was able to meet Naseem (Political blogger), Magnus Froderberg (Photography magazine chief editor on Sweden), Cristina Garcia Rodero (Magnum Photographer), William Yan (Street Style Photographer), Thorsten (Overgaard.dk), Brett (Leica Workshop Photographer), Peter McCollough (SF Street Photographer), Jean-Jacques Viau (Leica Internet Head), Oliver Bachmann (Leica Camera Switzerland Head), and my beloved Bruce Gilden (Magnum Photographer). Did I also mention I met and took a photo with Elliott Erwitt? Watch the video below to read more about my day, and also make sure to check out the photos I took during the event as well!

Let me know which photo is your favorite, and ask me any other questions you may have had about the Leica Magnum Paris event below!

Gilden is a favorite of mine as well. One day on my way into the office in Mid-town Manhattan he was sitting in the same car as me on the R train. My stop is 49th., but I stayed on the train until he got off; I had to meet one of my heroes. I followed him up to the street and we had a talk. Nice, even slapped me on the back. I had a printout of an article on the Mamiya 7II on me (perfect!) and I asked him to sign it, which he did.

    Awesome guy.

You should always dress up like that for your videos. It looks more professional. :-)

You are so lucky to be there. You will get really big and one day I can say “I slept with Eric Kim… (…in the same room in Beirut). :-)

Regarding your M9 shots. They are nice, but I still don’t see a difference to any other camera. Sure maybe the feeling of shooting with it, might be great, but with this hype, everyone thinks he well be only great, if he uses a Leica M9. This is a wrong expectation. I guess I will never buy one of these as I’m still not convinced about the value you would get for the price, but maybe one day this attitude might change. I have the money and I could use it, but I still don’t feel like paying the amount of a cheap car just for a camera and a lens…

    • http://www.flickr.com/photos/exi87 Jaap Barnhoorn

I do agree with you Thomas. You can take great shots with every camera, but it’s also about the experience.
The food tastes good, no matter if you used a fork and knive or chop-sticks, but the experience between ordinary cutlery and chop-sticks is very different.
(I think I’m a chop-sticks kind of guy and prefer a rangefinder for its size and controls :) )

It’s indeed a lot of money for a change in experience, but if you like chop-sticks and have a lot of money… Why not buy a Leica M9? :)

    • http://www.erickimphotography.com Eric Kim

Great feedback Thomas. You definitely won’t see the difference in terms of the images you shoot (unless you shoot at f/1.4 which is amazing) but it is about the experience. Test out the M9 and I think you may be surprised. But definitely, it isn’t the camera that matters– it is the photographer.

  • http://mayank-p.blogspot.com Mayank

Eric, this is turning out to be a great event. I am just wondering if we are going to see an Eric with leica henceforth. RIP 5DMkII :)

    • http://www.erickimphotography.com Eric Kim

Haha we will see– I love shooting with the Leica but can shoot street photography with any camera you hand me ;)

  • http://www.wanderinglulu.com Ewanglee

I like the concierge lady sweeping the front of the building.
The event looks amazing- and wow – Bruce Gilden. What an icon! Meeting all those cool people…. I’m drooling already.
I love the new M9-P. Only thing is I think it’s too much money. But Leica is famous for all their special additions. I on the other hand am waiting for the M10 :-)
    Cheers.

So like wow, Bruce Gilden [that is one for your wall!] you just beam saying his name ‘enthusiastic asian guy’. ;) Great street shots.. I think you are going to miss that camera. The future will tell us if you downsize your car to get a Leica. Really though.. your work stands as it is no matter what you shoot with.

  • http://www.50-mm.com/ Ariel

That’s great you meet your hero! The experience must have been incredible.
My favorite is the guy with the eye patch, makes you wonder.

Leica M9 is great, because you spend less time adjusting settings and more time making photos.

The fact that the M series translation from Film to Digital was simple and straight forward… Leica is very smart about keeping it the same. They kept true to there brand.

    M10 = Medium Format :)

    • http://www.erickimphotography.com Eric Kim

      m10 = new X-ray technology ;)

  • oisin

With everything you’re doing, people you’re meeting and the blogging too I can only guess you’re running on adrenalin to keep going. You’re enthusiasm astounds me. Keep it up please, Eric, it’s all great stuff!

I like the concierge lady – so Parisian, but my favourite it #15 – dunno who he is but he reminds me of Inspector Clouseau in that mac and ‘tache.

  • John Kim

Wow, Elliot Erwitt! My hero! :)
Excited at watching your Paris street photos & video clips. I am waiting for next photos and video clips as well.

  • http://www.flickr.com/photos/jasonsmoore/ JasonSMoore

So, they expect people to pay more for the same camera without the red dot? Send me some money and I’ll send you a piece of gaffer tape that you can use to cover the red dot on your M9.

    • http://www.erickimphotography.com Eric Kim

Hey Jason, I believe it is the same price as when the regular M9 was announced. But I do know a ton of streettogs that do cover up their cameras with the gaffers tape ;)

      • Ludmilla

Wasn’t that one of yours “invisibility” advices?

        • http://www.erickimphotography.com Eric Kim

          Yes maam ;)

  • http://www.flickr.com/photos/quarlo/ Todd

I’ve run into Bruce G a few times here on the streets in NYC. Very cool friendly fella.
Total character…like right out of one of his own pics!

Last time I saw him, he was dining at Totonno’s pizza with his lovely wife. I told him “you’re my favorite!”, he said “we just need a few thousand more like you.”

Here’s one from 2005 on the boardwalk. While we were conversing he would take a moment here to snap off some frames of passersby….

    • http://www.erickimphotography.com Eric Kim

You got it right Todd-the guy is amazing and a character ;)

  • http://www.facundojose.com.ar Facundo Jose

I would pick the concierge lady sweeping the front of the building.

    Thanks !

    • http://www.erickimphotography.com Eric Kim

I love that one too Facundo!

  • http://www.georgiemathew.wordpress.com Georgie Mathew

love the black and white pictures from the leica but even better are the color ones!

Glad you could meet all your heroes!!

    • http://www.erickimphotography.com Eric Kim

It really was awesome Gerogie — thanks! :D

  • Don

Self-portrait in puddle of water framed by the Eiffel tower. That’s the shot!

  • Rudy

Stop copying this Bruce Gilden style. Only assholes scare old People in The Street with Shooting them this style.

If I meet you and you take a Picture of me I will Test what’s harter: Your Leica or your head.

    • http://www.erickimphotography.com Eric Kim

To my defense, I definitely don’t scare people when shooting on the streets. I always pretend like I’m taking a photo of something else, and most people look behind them when I shoot ;)

      • Rudy

        Sorry Eric,
I think my words are a bit too rude, I know you and Bruce are nice Guys and take beautiful Pictures. But I’ always afraid that someday an old Lady suffers a heartattack when someone flashes her on The Street. So I got too angry. Please excuse me!

        • http://www.erickimphotography.com Eric Kim

          No worries Rudy :)

  • http://www.davidcrane.org David Crane

Only Leica would have the audacity to put on a huge press conference to announce a new camera which is nothing but the old camera with the logo removed….. and charge more for it!!! (I guess my black tape is worth about $800.00) I had hoped Leica might announce a partnership with a Japanese company so they could produce cameras with realistic price tags. It would be great to see what talented young eyes could do with a digital rangefinder, all we see these days are Leica images by of a bunch of rich hacks who are only interested in lens charts and a camera accessory worthy of their LV wallet.
