My good friend Yanidel (an accomplished street photographer from Paris, now on an around-the-world trip in Argentina) wrote a great complementary opinion to my original article “6 Reasons Why Shooting Film Will Make You a Better Street Photographer“, titled: “5 Reasons Why Digital Will Make You a Better Street Photographer“. He brings up many fantastic points in his article, and I highly recommend everyone to read it.

So now you have read both sides of the picture, which do you prefer–film or digital? Leave a comment below telling us how you feel!

I love that “Film is expensive” is followed by a photograph with the caption “Leica M9 with 35mm Summilux Asph”.

There is a distinction between spending money on film development vs. getting an M9. The $7K you spend on a M9 is not a true cost. After many years of shooting you will be able to recoup at least half of that money. The depreciation is definitely less than what you would spend on film + development.

I agree with Dave’s comment, and think your reasoning is more logical than Yanidel’s. Digital has it place in the world but it certainly isn’t a big help in street photography.

Well, film is more for my side-projects. Digital will always be easier when it comes to commercial works.

It’s hard to be a purist these days. In the end, one will still play with both film & digital.

oh my god! i haven’t shot film for ages! Both options are great, the point is just enjoy shotting.

Digital give you a preview of your results instantaneously, that’s is its strength and its weakness. you need to know how to use it. Film makes you to thing about what you are doing, every shot has to count. you don’t have second chances. that could be disturbing, but also make you take better pictures.

As soon as I saw that picture I thought “Yanidel.” His picture says it all. The number 1 reason to shoot digital is it’s fun! The point of street photography is to capture the decisive moment. The means…less so.

I personally like to shoot digital more. I always thought shooting film is better until I shot my first few rolls. Imagine getting ready to shoot a very interesting sequence of shots when you are at the 34th shot of your film roll.

after attending photojournalism school i was totally burnt out on the digital experience that was understandably forced upon me and my workflow. i left school, sold all my digital gear and shot kodak portra vc 160 for a little over a year. my prime workflow being what i like to call ‘candid environmental portraiture’, i later realized, years later, that it was simply more planned street photography. i removed myself even further in january of this year buying 500 feet of ilford hp5 and chemicals. built a darkroom in by half bath.

i feel there is a natural character you get with film that you simply cant mimic with a digital sensor. not to mention the fact that taking it further and developing your own film is equally as raw a process as shooting on the street. i think it all together promotes a united feeling that not only physically shows the street and the life happening on it but a feeling and perspective that youre there living along side it.

while there are applications i still use a digital format for, the film medium..35mm or otherwise will always hold a higher standard in my eyes as well as my heart.

sadly Mr Yanidel’s photos are weak, mediocre, despite having spent a high amount of money in gear. I would suggest, humbly, that he revisited his passion for photography, and served it better by no longer taking useless, tasteless, talentless pictures.
Oh, and nor film neither processing are expensive…
