Please introduce yourselves!

1x1.trans Please introduce yourselves!

Hey guys,

So after my guest post on Digital Photography School for my “10 Tips for the Aspiring Street Photographer,” I have been getting a lot of love from the online photography community. In order to get to know you guys better (and for you guys to get to know one another better as well), why not leave a comment and introduce yourselves? Let me know where you’re from, how you found out about my site, and what about street photography appeals to you? Looking forward in hearing from all of you :)

  • Ina Lambreva

Hello Erik! :)) I’m Ina from Bulgaria but now I live in the UK. Street photography is my passion! I was very happy when I read your introduction in DPS and I’m here! I’m looking forward for your book!

    • Ina Lambreva

Please excuse my ERROR, Eric! (blush)

    • http://www.erickimphotography.com Eric Kim

Great to hear the love from Bulgaria! I heard it is a beautiful country. Do you have a link to your images?

  • http://digitalscrapbooklessons.com/ PatriciaD

I am so NOT a professional photographer but I love, love, love my camera (high end point and shoot – someday I’ll have a D-SLR) but I really enjoyed reading your piece on street photography and can’t wait till you have your book done. I am so inspired to go try shooting some great street shots. Thank you!! What a great article! I take my photography and turn it into scrapbook pages (mostly for family) but I love Photoshop for this.

    • http://www.erickimphotography.com Eric Kim

      Hey Patricia,

Which high end point and shoot do you have? I’m thinking about picking up a Canon S90.

Glad to hear you liked my work too! Your digital scrapbook lessons is awesome too! Keep it up :)

      • http://www.causon.co.uk Steve Causon

I just got a Sony nex-5 16mm 2.8 lens and a 18-55is zoom. Aps-c sensor, large tilt screen, proper shutter, 7 frames a second and not a lot else! True minimalist camera, and slr in a point and shoot. 6400 iso in anti blur mode is practically noise free…

  • http://brokenhuman.com Kevin

Like Patricia, I am not a professional either. Honestly, I just bought my Nikon D60 9 months ago to get some good pictures of my baby girl born in January. And as of 1 week ago I just made the switch from the dreaded “auto jpg” to Aperture RAW. And I am really getting into it all. I was really leaning towards food photography, but after reading your article on digital photography school, I am really digging street photography as well. I really don’t have a niche, so for now, I’ll just shoot everything and see what I find more fun. But anyway, just wanted to let you know that your article helped aspire me into taking even more photos all the time rather then just when I feel like taking out my camera. And also wanted to mention that I think your photos are amazing! Keep up the good work and I will be following your blog now. Keep us updated on any more articles you write and when your ebook comes out!

    Much love from New Jersey,
    Kevin

    • http://www.erickimphotography.com Eric Kim

      Hi Kevin,

Congratulations on getting the new cam and switching to RAW! Street photography (and food photography) are tons of fun. As for not having a focus, just take photos of what interest you!

BTW your site is super creepy– I kinda like it ;)

Love from The City of Angels,

      Eric

      • http://brokenhuman.com Kevin

Thanks for reply. And the creepy comment. Made me lol. And yeah, for now taking photos of evrything I find enjoyable is all I plan on doing. It is giving me more experience with post production as well with all the different photos and shooting in RAW. Having a lot of fun with it. Eventually the creepy website will house some of the photos I take. =)

        Much love from New Jersey,
        -Kevin

        • http://www.erickimphotography.com Eric Kim

Haha no problem. Keep in touch and keep rockin’ Kevin

  • Carolyn

    Hi Eric:
I enjoyed your comments on the DPS site. I love taking pictures of people, but have been using a telephoto lens. I will try your suggestion of getting up close and personal. Like most new street photographers, one is afraid of offending or getting in someones personal space. I have to work on getting closer with a small wide angle lens. Thanks for the tips, and I too look forward to your blog and your book.

    • http://www.erickimphotography.com Eric Kim

      Hi Carolyn,

Getting up and personal is the best! You also will be surprised, the closer you get, the less people seem to notice you ;)

  • Fritz

    Hey Eric,

I live in Long Beach not too far from you and love street photography. I am more into the candid photos than the posed set ups that we normally see. I am no professional and only got into photography because I upgraded my wife to a Canon 40D a few years back and got her hand me down 300D. The camera is old but it does exactly what I want it to do and that is to take photos. Ever since picking up that camera, I take it with me everywhere!

I would love to do photography for a living instead of being the I.T guy that I am now. My question is, how would you make money as a street photog? I will be looking forward to more posts from you and even added you on facebook. Keep up the good work man.

    • http://www.erickimphotography.com Eric Kim

      Hi Fritz,

Candid is definitely the way to go. It is funny, I actually gave my girlfriend my old Rebel XT (My first camera) when I got a 5D. Also glad to hear your cam is always by your side!

Being a street photographer, you probably won’t make a lot of money. I work as an online community manager as my day job, and street photography is purely my passion.

      Stay tuned and please subscribe!

  • Bill

    Hi Eric

Really enjoyed the article. Some great ideas which I’ll be trying out soon – I’m going on a vacation to Europe so there’ll be plenty of opportunities …

I’ll let you know if I get any decent shots ……

Look forward to the book – keep it going.

    • http://www.erickimphotography.com Eric Kim

Thank you Bill! Europe is a gorgeous place. Take a ton of photos! :D

  • Michael Basil

I was a professional photographer and got burnt out. I love the refreshing nature of being able to just observe and take pictures again through candid street photography. I found a link to you through the blog post you mentioned above and can’t wait to see you book.

    • http://www.erickimphotography.com Eric Kim

I have done a few professional gigs, and it is definitely tiring and a ton of work. Street photography is a great way to “forget the rules” and just get lost. Glad to hear to have you here Michael: )

  • http://frenchmarketmaven.blogspot.com/ Marie

    Bonjour Eric,
I am a former Venice-ite now living in Paris. I am mad about street photography; people, places, things, market places, food… you name it. Came across your blog via Digital Photography School…. your work is beautiful and inspiring. Thank you.

Here is my flicker photo stream… http://www.flickr.com/photos/14383259@N05/

looking forward to more from you…
    Marie

    • http://www.erickimphotography.com Eric Kim

      Hi Marie,

I loved your images on your Flickr! How is life in Venice, and the transition to Paris? I visited Venice for maybe 2 days, and am quite curious about how it is living there.

Hope to keep in contact with you as well! :)

      Eric

hey eric… it’s me again… sorry we have not been properly introduced so i’m glad you put out this post… i’m here in chino hills, about 35mi east of LA… i don’t really consider myself a photographer in the traditional sense but as an artist who happens to use photography as a medium… i am still learning how to shoot as i’m relatively a newb… i’ve used street photography as one of the forms to express my art… thanks and cheers – rob

      Hi Rob,

I had a chance to look at your Flickr and you have some amazing images! I love how dark and mysterious your shots are–something I want to work on.

Keep it up and stay in touch :)

  • Linda

    Hi Eric,
I am a beginner DSLR (Nikon D40) user though I’ve enjoyed taking pictures all my life. I tend to stick to nature, landscapes and the like but I’m trying to find my niche/passion. I am very critical of my own photos and find difficulty taking pictures of the ordinary thinking others won’t find them interesting and yet I find others’ pictures of the ordinary fascinating. Thank you for the tips, your photos are beautiful. I look forward to your book as well.
    Linda from Sacramento

    • http://www.erickimphotography.com Eric Kim

      Hi Linda,

Great to hear love from Sacramento! I am originally from the Bay Area (Alameda, to be specific).

It is hard to find a niche, and I’m glad to have found street photography.

Good luck on finding your niche and take care! :)

      Eric

    Hiya Erik!

I stumbled upon your site cos someone relinked it via Twitter (thank god for these things!). Hello all the way from Malaysia! :) I love street as well but it doesn’t pay the bills sadly but don’t all hobbies heh! Keep it up!

    • http://www.erickimphotography.com Eric Kim

Street photography definitely doesn’t pay the bills, but it is a beautiful art form. Welcome! :D

  • Kika

    Hi Eric,

I live in Bangalore, India and have been taking photographs ever since I can remember (my father and I both enjoy photography). I like photographing my dog, landscapes and senior citizens.

Street photography in India is quite a challenge as I invariably draw a small crowd (being a 23 year old female). Flashing them my teeth only eggs them on and unfortunately, I get quite conscious and my photography suffers. Thus, my poor husband doubles as my bodyguard on my street photography expeditions :)
Your blog post at DPS was very informative and I’m hoping to take some interesting photos based on your tips on my upcoming trip to the United Arab Emirates.

Do you have any tips on warding off unwelcome advances from complete strangers on the street?

    • http://www.erickimphotography.com Eric Kim

      Hi Kika,

      Thank you for stopping by!

I have never had any “unwelcome” advances from complete strangers on the street. I am not sure if this accounts because I am a male or not.

I have always wanted to do street photography as India… and I plan on visiting soon! If showing them your teeth eggs them on, put on a cold hard face! Maybe people will back off then ;)

      Good luck!

      Eric

    Hi Eric
What started as a curiosity , has now become a passion.. Photography has had a very positive effect on me.. And am still trying to reach its elusive horizons.. :) I am from India.. I like Street Photography.. But am yet to overcome the fear of seeing strangers looking at my Nikon D5000 like a machine gun.. Your tips on street photography are very inspiring.. Keep up the work..

      Good luck! :)

  • http://www.arofarmer.blogspot.com Norman Tsai

    Hi Eric,

Got to know you via your street photography post at DPS. I like your street pictures… they let me be “at the scene”.

Appreciate your simple and common sense approach to street photography and will practice them when I’m out in the street. If I’m to name just one thing I took from your post, that’s “Smile” while on the street :)

Looking forward to your free pdf book on street photography (a rarity in our modern day capitalistic society and I salute you for keeping it free) and wish you every success in your photography adventure!

    Cheers!
    Norman from Singapore

    • http://www.erickimphotography.com Eric Kim

      Hi Norman,

Just took a peek at your site and it is a great wealth of information! I esp. like how you taught the readers how you set up your candle scene!

I will hopefully continue to work on my book, and it will be out soon!

Take care Norman, and visit often! :)

Hi Eric , great article , i do a little street photography as an amateur and find what your saying to be 100 % true. Lots of smiles after the picture was taken and everyone smiles back. I get a lot of “whats your web site ” questions afterwards .

I live in Toronto, Ontario, Canada and travel across Canada 3 times a year , thus slots of opportunity to fine tune.

Please take a look at my flickr stream and provide feedback when you have some time would be great. http://www.flickr.com/photos/danmarston

    Hello Eric!

My name’s Tammie Tan, from Malaysia.
I am one of those who got to ‘know’ you from your article “10 Tips for the Aspiring Street Photographer”.
I’ve always loved street photography, I just don’t have the courage to go out there and shoot. But your article really gave me the motivation to start. Awesome tips, great advice and a really well written article.
I also love your work. Inspiring! Keep up the good work and God bless :)

  • http://moonlitshores.blogspot.com Diana Shores

Hi. I enjoy photography as a hobby and at this point only use the Canon PowerShot SD780IS Digital Elph. It time I may level up to better equipment, but this little camera is compact and fits into my pocket with ease so I can always have it with me. I have recently been capturing pictures of local musicians in the Cedar Rapids, IA, area and writing blurbs on my blog called Strolling Along Moonlit Shores (http://moonlitshores.blogspot.com), on Facebook, and on easterniowalife.com. I would appreciate if people would follow my blog, and I will do the same for them. Thanks, Eric, for your tips on photography. They are greatly appreciated. Diana

  • http://yiyishoo.blogspot.com Yani Dueri

    Hello!
Im Yani from Bolivia! I really enjoyed your post on DPS! ill be waiting for it as well!
yes, i agree with what you said… you are trying to say something through the takes you make not just take pictures for the sake of composition. in my case, i try portraying my faith in Christ, what i believe, feel and think. it’s great because when others get to see your pictures they can relate to their own situations and interpret your pictures according to their own views. just like music, lyrics and melodies are interpreted differently by each person, art in general!
very precise and clean work you do! :D

  • http://www.timothyagee.com Timothy Agee

I also enjoyed your article in DPS. I live and shoot in Daytona Beach Florida. I do stock, HDR, and getting into Street photos. In fact your article inspired me to go shoot some street photos today :) I think it’s funny how a lot of people don’t know the art involved in street photography. The right place with the right people, doing the right thing. I love the good shot that comes along though where you do Feel the emotion and can almost see yourself there.
    Thanks Erick

  • http://www.mercourimedia.com Bobbi Mercouri

I love your work and thank you again for the time you spend on this Blog to help others.
I’m a senior citizen, retired graphic designer. I’ve sold some photographs directly to the public, but wonder how and to whom do you sell yours.

I love shooting outdoors, nature, old farm machinery etc. but my real passion is people. However, I can’t sell any of these without a release… very frustrating.
How do you go about getting model and/or location releases? and how do you keeep track of them.

  • http://ved-pikapic.blogspot.com/ Ved

Hi Eric, I’m Ved from Delhi, India. I came to know about your website from DPS site. Thank you for sharing your experiences. It really helps a lot for people like me who are not professionals but are learning and trying to improve each day hoping to be one some day. I still very new to the art of photography and still practicing the basic rules of photography so that someday I’m able to break them ;). I try to shoot anything and everything, macro, portrait or landscapes, anything that can be worth framing. Please do visit my blog and if you could suggest something based off pictures I’ve posted I’d be delighted. Hope to hear from you soon! take care

    Hey Eric,

Well, I just read the entire article about what you had to say on the subject of street photography. I’ve been interested for awhile in that type of photography, but I’m a really shy person. Most of the time if you find me at a party, I’ll be the guy in the corner trying to make conversation with one or two people.

Going up and approaching people is not my cup of tea, but I would really love to give it a try. I’m going to bookmark your site now, because I absolutely love it!

    -Matt

Hello Eric. It was awesome to see your stuff. I thought I would drop by after seeing your 10 tips on street Photo ops! I found them helpful mostly I like the whole respect thing heartening…to many people exploit and it gets me down.

    Hi there, Eric :)

I’m Yenny, from Indonesia. I have interest in street photography, tried more than once to take pictures by looking around my neighborhood so that I can get used to it. There are several photo competitions about street photography, one is about “social inequality”, I really want to take photos with meanings… Then I read your article about shooting the homeless people–should be careful about the line, it was something that holding me up to take pictures.

But after I read all those your tips, I really wanna go out and try to blend in the people (get used to the environment)

Thanks a lot! and i’m really looking forward for your book! :D

  • Vivian S.

    Hi Eric,

My name is Vivian, and I came across your site through a bunch of channels (Reddit /r/photography –>betterinblackinwhite.com –>DPS –>here!). Your style/philosophy of photography really resonates with me; I’m always trying to capture every candid moment I encounter in hopes of turning it into a story-telling image. I started photographing with a DSLR 1.5 years ago (have been furiously taking pictures of everything ever since I was given my first P&S by my dad over 10 years ago–my friends have dubbed me “The Historian”). I recently upgraded from a Nikon D40 to a D300, and decided it was about time I learned all the intricacies of my camera and photography in order to take better pictures.

I’m currently trying to absorb as much information as possible about my new camera and, now having found your blog/website, street photography within the next 3 weeks before my trip to Europe. I hope I’ll return with no regrets about not having captured everything I’ll be seeing and experiencing there!

    • http://www.erickimphotography.com Eric Kim

      Hi Vivian,

Your “Historian” approach definitely sounds like it is paying off dividends. A lot of my buddies have Nikons–and they love them.

And congrats on the Europe trip! You will have an amazing time. Your love and passion for photography truly shows through your words. Keep me posted, and share your photos of your trip with me (+others) soon! :)

    Hi,

I stumbled upon here after reading your tips on street photography in DPS. I live & capture the land of India through my Canon gear. Haven’t really gotten into street photography. Your article provides good information but the initial fear & nervousness needs to be broken before getting comfortable in this genre. Also street photography in India is quite different. Either you will be overwhelmed or you will be scrutinized for intrusion of privacy. Its a tough business as far as I know. Still the opportunity here is enormous.

    Thanks & Regards
    Prem

    • http://www.erickimphotography.com Eric Kim

      Hey Prem,

I am actually hoping to visit India in the near future. From what I have heard, it is a photographic goldmine! It is true that there are different rules there, however. Hopefully you could maybe give ME some tips once you get the code of street photography cracked over there ;)

  • Emma

    Hey,

I found your site after reading your post on Digital Photography Tips. I am student with a Nikon who is extremely interested in candid photography. I can’t wait to read your book. If it is anything like your post, it will make me itching to go out and take photos.

    • http://www.erickimphotography.com Eric Kim

      Hi Emma,

I will definitely keep you posted on the release of my book! :) Feel free to come back and visit often

  • http://photography.ramkarran.com Nikhil Ramkarran

Hey Eric, I’m a bit late to this party, but I’ve been following you on twitter since I saw that article on DPS. I am definitely a fan and am inspired by your street photography. Although I don’t manage to get out on the street as often as I’d like, it is definitely my favourite aspect of photography.

    Looking forward to the book.

      Hey Nikhil,

Had a chance to check out your site and I was quite blown away by your photography! Your 365 project was quite impressive as well :)

The streets are definitely where it is at! Hopefully you decide to pursue more street photography–and I wish the best for you in Guyana (its amazing how the internet really links people from all around the world)

    Hey Eric,

A Dutch guy here! Thank you for that great article on DPS.
I’m merely a beginner with photography and I’m still trying to find my niche in the kind of photography I want to do. You really inspired me to at least have a try at street photography and this might be IT for me.
The past few days I’ve read through your blog and I love your tips and passionate writing about street photography. Your photo’s are outstanding and inspiring as well.

My camera is a Nikon D5000 and apart from a 17-70mm lens I also have a 35mm prime which will be great for this subject, so no excuses about the gear.
The only excuses atm are the weather and a busy schedule, but I’ll try to find some time and have my camera with me all the time.

Thanks for sharing your knowledge and passion.

    Greetings,

    Jaap

  • Jason Callahan

Hi, I’m Jason Callahan, a Graphic Design student from central Illinois. I came into the idea of learning more about photography to help with creative images and work for projects/clients and started looking at blogs to help learn more about photography when I came across your article/tips on things to try. Totally digging it and enjoying what I refer to as “photo bombing” complete strangers. Looking forward to more posts and insights.

  • http://www.flickr.com/photos/indigosun Nova

I StumbledUpon your site a few days ago, and I’ve been hooked since. My father was
(and to a degree still is, though he’s veered in new directions recently) a street photographer. Growing up along the Cali coast, he saw a lot of what you see, and felt the need to capture it as well. I remember well going on road trips solely to shoot (for him, at least) and the joy he got out of it.

I got really into photography about three years ago, though you can imagine that it’s been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. Street photography is something which has always daunted me a bit, as the intimidation of photographing strangers can be quite overwhelming, but I have been inspired by your work to, as you so eloquently put it, ‘just get out there and shoot.’

Thank you very much, and I look forward to following you on your adventures, and embarking on my own.

    • http://www.erickimphotography.com Eric Kim

Beautiful story Nova–looking forward in getting to know u better :)

  • http://pavandaxini17.blogspot.com Pavan Daxini

    Hey Eric!

I am Pavan Daxini, a 3rd year engineering undergrad student from India. Photography started as a hobby and soon became passion. Other areas of interest include short-film-making (cinematography, editing, screenplay), Human Computer Interaction and to some extent typography. People can connect with me on http://www.facebook.com/pavandaxini17 where I upload most of my work. (Thuogh I like the idea of uploading my recent work to flickr, but the netspeeds are damn too slow at campus!) You can also watch some of my short-films (mostly zero budget!) on my youtube channel http://www.youtube.com/user/pavandaxini17

Coming to the blog, loved the articles. Stumbled upon the link (which one of my facebook friend shared) couple of hours ago and got glued to it immediately. I had quite few misconceptions regarding street photography (street photography isn’t exactly my forte, I am mostly into wildlife uptill now) thanks a ton for providing with all the insight. :-)

    • http://www.erickimphotography.com Eric Kim

      Hi Pavan,

It is glad to have you! You sound like you are a very well-connected individual with a ton of passions!

Glad to have you as a part of the community. Have you joined “ASP” yet? http://www.flickr.com/groups/aspiringstreetphotographers/

  • http://www.flickr.com/photos/negrin/ Rafal

Considering how I’ve already started posting elsewhere on your blog, I thought I should introduce myself, the polite man that I am. I’m an amateur photographer from Warsaw, Poland (translator and English teacher by day). I’ve been doing “some photography” probably for about fifteen years or so, even went to school for two years, and still every now and then, looking at my shots and the silly mistakes I keep making, I feel like a beginner. That must be because I’ve always treated photography as an on-and-off hobby, so my experience never truly accumulated. One way or another, I’ve mostly always looked for the somewhat abstract element in the surrounding world (some of the photos in my Flickr stream probably show that) and there have never been many people in my pictures, if any. Ironically, when it comes to other people’s photos, it’s street photography that I’ve always enjoyed looking at the most, so recently I told myself I really need to get into it more, fear of strangers be damned. How convenient, then, that I’ve stumbled upon your site, Eric–found a link to the article about shooting from the hip on reddit.com. I like your style (that actually goes for both the pictures and the way you write about photography) and since it seems you’re trying to build a community here, I thought I might try to become a part of it. Oops, look at me rambling. Guess it shows I’m a man of words on top of (trying to be) a man of images…

  • Milo

Hi from NYC. Enjoy your site Eric. Lots of useful info all in one place. Good move. By way of a brief intro I’m a photojournalist shooting for 3 weekly newpapers in the Big Apple. In my other life I’m an art director/graphic designer doing marketing/branding. With all the garbage out there pretending to be “street photography” yours stands out….tells a story…is well shot…and executed.
I shoot on the NYC streets…..not sure if I should call it street, pj or documentary…guess it’s a combo of all 3. recently I’ve begun to shoot with an Olympus E-PL1 and Panasonic 20mm pancake.
Excellent for whay you do by the way. Love it when I will be on assignment using the PEN against lots of PJs with their Mark 5s and D3s…. Here is a link to some recent work….some personal/some published.

Hi Eric! You know me a bit already from the comments I’ve made on your site –and I thank you for your return visit to my website. I just recently restarted on Twitter, and found you on a search for street photographers. I’ve had a lifelong interest in photography, but only got serious about it a few short years ago. In June this year, I left my teaching position in Sydney, and we moved to retire in Santiago, Chile, my wife’s home town. Expect to see street and cultural shots from many parts of Latin America from me in the future. I’m now a continual follower of your site, blog and Twitter. All the best, Andrew.

    • http://www.erickimphotography.com Eric Kim

Love hearing the support Andrew! I am excited to see tons of amazing shots from Chile. And congrats on the retirement! :D

Hi! I own a photography blog http://www.photographymojo.com, where I put together the most interesting stuff I find about popular photo topics. I don’t like boring photos with a big touch of Photoshop, I like the free style, the original way. This is why I really like your work (I landed on your blog from Digital Photo School), I added you in my blogroll and I look forward for more interesting posts!

Hi Again Eric, I’ve been leaving a couple of responses on your postings and just saw this so here I am!
I’m a street photographer, abstract artist and poet specialising in Paris. I combine all these things in my attempt to be creative, sometimes succeeding, sometimes not.
One example of that would be trying to take creative photos on my iPhone of my Paris street art. Sounds weird I know but who wants to be normal! Hope you’ll have time to check out some of my stuff – I’m enjoying yours :-)

  • http://www.simongarnier.org Simon Garnier

Hi everyone. My name’s Simon. I’m a young scientist, post-doc at Princeton University, and an amateur photographer during my free time. You can see some of my photos on my Flickr stream (http://www.flickr.com/photos/50390409@N04/) or on my blog (http://www.simongarnier.org).

I used to shoot with a DSLR but I recently dropped it from a smaller Lumix GF1 camera. One consequence of this move is that I now carry my camera almost all the time and I started taking pictures of people in the street. While searching for more information about street photography, I found Eric’s website that leads me to the “aspiring street photographers” Flickr group. I hope to find there advice and critics to help me start with this photographic style completely new for me, and maybe also some people living around Philly or NYC who would like to make their shooting sessions more social.

  • http://eljonsalenga.com/ Eljon

Hello Eric, hello everyone. I’m Eljon, an Accountancy student from the Philippines. I just bought my own camera early this year, a Nikon D3000 with an 18-55mm kit lens, and I want to learn more about photography. Before I bought my camera, I have been taking photos of landscapes and anything that caught my interest using camera phones.

I want to learn street photography because I think it is much easier to learn by experience instead of doing fashion or events where you need models and an event to go to. I also thought of doing street photography since there are not much who takes photos of the streets here in the Philippines.

I first stumbled here upon your blog a few weeks ago (or months, maybe) after I saw your post at Digital Photography School. I already learned some things from my readings here and I hope to learn more. Thanks! :D

  • http://brusselaars-daily-photo.blogspot.com/ Luc Moreau

    Hi Eric,

I live in Belgium and work in Brussels, this city being the subject of my street photo blog. I’m a long time film shooter (started in the 70′s) but up until recently I was shooting other subjects like landscape, travel, family snapshots and such… My new passion thus is street photography which I share once a day on my blog. I’m also active on Flickr as “arzitek” and I discovered this ASP group thanks to a plug in (I think) a forum I read on pentaxforums.com.

Keep up the good work and let’s all learn from each other (I still have a lot to learn when it comes to editing my work and trashing all the uninteresting ones I’m afraid…)

    Hey Eric,
Great site! I liked all the tips. Covering the camera body with black tape is a smart idea. I make a lot of trips into LA from San Diego to shoot photos, and its a great idea to add to a low profile. Im inspired by your photos. Just got a new Canon T2I/550D and just love it. Hope to see you on the streets.

Let me know where you’re from, how you found out about my site, and what about street photography appeals to you?

Hello there! My name is Kody! I’m currently living in LA, but I grew up in Arizona. I’m studying photography at the art institute, I’m hoping to someday be doing documentary photography. My dad sent me the link to your blog thinking I would like it, and boy was he right! I am a very passionate people watcher. I find people fascinating. It’s only fitting that I combine my two loves, observing and photographing, and try to make a living out of it. If you’d like to check out some of my work, I’ll post a link to my FB page. I’m in the processes of getting a website.

    Hi Eric,

I have been looking at your blog for a while and I have to say it’s full of great tips for street photography. I especially enjoyed your post about ‘how not to look like a creep’ and I put gaffers tape on my D-SLR too and what a huge difference it has made! I’m more invisible than ever before. Anyway, a little bit about me: I’m a Finnish street photographer living and studying in Oxford, U.K and Washington D.C on my breaks from school. I love observing life and capturing meaningful moments with the camera. And I like your photos and your attitude and love to street photography :)))

  • http://sergebouvet.com Serge Bouvet

Hi, my name is Serge Bouvet from France. I’m a outlaw :).
In France, the Street Photography is not allowed if you shoot the face of people.
I’m working for politic press, I’m photographer. Every day, I have to shoot famous French politician. After job, I shoot the people in street and it’s really really really interesting.

In my opinion, the street photography is poetical vision of free people… because the freedom of society is on street…

  • http://www.photomonomania.com evangelo costadimas (EC)

    Hi Eric,
I am a street photographer living in Hong Kong, I found you through IPA.
I shoot mostly from the hip, vertical format with a manual focus 50mm lens set at f1.4 (i.e. how to make photography difficult).
In your activities, workshops, blog and talking to interested parties, please do us a favour and help dispel the notion that ‘street photography’ includes photographing streets, such photos belong to urban landscape, architecture or other related genres. Street photography is about photographing people in a candid manner where ‘people’ constitutes the main subject and ‘street’ is a misnomer for ‘in-public’ as it may not even be in the photo. Apparently so many people get it wrong these days, I even had a call from an art gallery that was looking for street photography and after my work was turned down they explained that they were looking for photos of streets and buildings whereas my photos were of people, how ridiculous is that?
Thank you for promoting street photography and for continuing the tradition. I agree with you that it has come under attack recently, we must emphasize, every chance we get, that we are street photographers, we are not terrorists, pedophiles, perverts or paparazzi.
    Keep in touch.

Just discovered your blog and am looking forward to getting stuck in to the great content you seem to have here.
I’m a photographer from England, now living in Miami, Florida.
I aim to get out on the streets more and do as much shooting as time allows.
But with work and family commitments, my time is precious!
I’m using my iPhone for all the reasons I’m sure you know (predominantly discretion, size, ease etc.)
But I do have other cameras so may well be out on the streets with those too.
Anyhow enough about me, I’m now going to start looking closer at what you’ve got to say.
Take care, and thanks for your wonderful open attitude to sharing your knowledge!

First film SLR (Pentax ME, MX and KX), developing etc. About 2 years ago I switched to digital, first with a Pentax K20D and K7 (still able to use my old lenses) but I soon moved on to a Leica M9 and I loved it ever since.
I only shoot B&W as it suits me best for my photographic work.

My own blog is just about showing a little of my own work but I prefer to see photos on paper instead of on a screen (it’s never the same).

Keep up the good work about the blog.
I still have to check out your portfolio but I’ll do this very soon.

      Thank you Peter–welcome! :)

    Hi!

I have just returned to photography after a ten year break! I found your blog while researching cameras and I love your work. It has inspired me to try my hand at street photography. I am still quite nervous but I am loving learning!

    Great photos!

    Hi

I am not a street photographer, but I like shooting on streets and really like your work here. I came across your website through Staran9ee’s tweet about the review of the RicohIII. I have been using the Canon 5D over the years but I have always found it intimidating when I shoot strangers. Living in the Middle East for more than eight years of my life has taught me to be cautious, I wish I had the RicohIII back then.

Looking at your pictures taken with the camera makes me want to get it and do some work with it. Also, love the way you share your knowledge with emerging/aspiring photographers. Keep up the great work.

Wow, what a great site. Lots of impressive work. I’m a long time Nikon man but I’ve just begun using a Leica M9 and I found this site in my pre-purchase research. It’s nice to see that a community of photographers has coalesced around this site and street photography in general. Kudos Eric!

I’ve been doing street photography in a vacuum for years, mostly because I didn’t know there was such a vibrant community of fellow street photogs out there. I’m in Boston but I like to travel when I can and snap away in exotic locales.

  • LWill

Hi, I’m Lisa I recently discovered a love of film photography, which then lead to a need to shoot street and jump into the realm of rangefinders. I just bought my first decent rangefinder a Bessa R2M and I’m hoping to expand my knowledge of film and street.

    Hi Eric!
Denis, french photographer from Lyon, using analog and digital camera.
The above adress is my portfolio but I have a blog (http://www.limagerit.fr in french sorry) that is quite different from my portfolio and on which I share my experiences. I do essentially posed family snapshot, portraits and studio with models. I blogged several times on street photography and street photgrapher. I am very intereted in but only tried a few times.
I would like to do spontaneous street photographes but also posed street portraits like 100strangers project.
I am glad I had discovered your blog and the one of Thomas! I hope we will meet one day and share a glass of good french wine before shooting in the streets! ;)
    regards,
    Denis

    Hi:

I’m Bassel. Just stumbled upon this blog and I would like to be part of the community.

I’ve been doing photography (as a hobby, I am a geophysicist by training and day job) all my life, but more seriously over the past few years. This year, I’m doing the 365 project for the first time so the volume of photos I’m taking is much more than I’ve done in the past. Street and candid people photography is my favorite style but I like to dabble in all different kinds.

I’m looking forward to be part of this community. my day job is very demanding but I hope I will have enough time to be active here.

    Hi there!
Im Anthony, I live in Boston and I actually go to school for photography in the city. I’ve only got one year left, and Im really loving it. School has been awesome for me and it’s factored in so much of what and where I want to take my photography, but I have never touched upon street photography before and would really like to dive into it. I stumbled on this blog looking on reddit and I can really enjoy it. What I was looking for was how to not be so scared of people. Because I know how to use a camer, the techniques and what not but the thing that has me stopped is confrontation. I recently saw your video in which you strapped a gopro to the top of your M9 and it was very inspiring. Ill definitely poke around this blog some more

Hello, my name is Ivanka, I live in Los Angeles and I am an aspiring photographer. I was googling some photography-related stuff when I stumbled upon your blog, then, I found myself reading all your articles and it amazed me of how little i know. I learned huge, huge, tips and they really opened my eyes with possibilities as well as faults I think I am guilty with. Thank you very much for creating a very helpful blog. Your works and words helped me to be more inspired.

I never knew that all I’ve been doing with my digital camera back in 2007, was called street photography until i took a class about the history of photography in 2010. (ha-ha not good with labeling things…) I have been very interested with people whenever they are outside of their comfort zone. I believe that their emotions are simply at it’s purest state whenever they are outside, It could be waiting for the bus or simply just walking. It’s so amazing that the camera can catch and freeze those split-second snaps of life.

  • Cal

    Hi Eric,
Just found your site after a spell of insomnia. It is now going to cause me more insomnia as I want to read everything on here. Your work is really inspiring and passionate, coupled with your humour on the site, it makes a change from stuffy photographers who don’t want to share anything. I live in London and regularly shoot there; rain becomes a friend. I just came back from India; so many amazing opportunities for street photography, it’s exhausting, but caught Dengue Fever so the camera gets a rest for a while. Look forward to reading more.

Thanks so much for the reply, made my day. Give us a shout if and when in London; so many great spots for capturing the great folk of London on film. :) Damn, I wish I had your job.

It has its own story and some kind of intimate feeling. Thanks for your videos and tips, especially ‘shoot from hip’ one. I went to China last month and practiced street photography skill I’ve got here from your blog. Maybe you can suggest something ( http://eatswaylove.com/street-photography/china/ ) so I can improve my skill. Thanks a lot Eric!

My name is Julian and I’m from NZ but have been living in London for the last 8 years.

  • Phil Rice

Hello Eric, my name is Phil and I live in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.

I’ve been following this blog for a couple of months now, and have learned a lot from it – thanks for all the stuff you have posted! I especially enjoy the videos of you doing street photography.

I’ve been photographing for decades, but only became interested in street photography this spring, after taking a course called “The Passionate Photographer”, given by accomplished photographer Steve Simon. That course inspired me and, since then, I’ve been doing some street photography (my photos are at pjr99.500px.com), but I’m still building my confidence. Some days I feel more confident than others in taking street photos.

I recently spent a week in New York City, and expected to do a lot of street photography, but for some reason, I didn’t do very well – perhaps it was too overwhelming visually (my town is quite small in comparison), but I was disappointed with my results.

I hope to take one of your street photography courses in the future.

    I just created a Facebook page, it’s http://www.facebook.com/pjr47

    Cheers.

My interest in street photography came from my re-introduction to film photography; one flowed right into the other. I now blog about a very specific, ongoing street photography project — the rundown, odd, sometimes-surreal downtown of my small city. It’s at:

I found your blog originally through the Leica blog, and then it kept popping up — guess we move in the same orbit(s).

I’m in North Carolina & went out today to photograph the furniture market in downtown High Point. Had fun, but did feel a bit intimidated. I want to get more aquainted with my Bessa R & 35/2.5 CV lens. I want to shoot more street & had already joined the flickr group when I found your blog on a google search. I have already read a couple of articles. Really good stuff here. Thanks, Greg

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1448258747 Brian W. Brown

Another North Carolinian here. Although I am originally from Albuquerque, NM. My name is Brian Brown. I have always loved street photography. I like its intimacy and immediacy. I have always admired how photographers like Vivian Maier, Henri Cartier-Bresson, or Garry Winogrand, could in a fraction of a second, seemingly capture the life story of a complete stranger. It has always struck me as somehow magical.

I’m an amateur with no formal training. Many years ago as a young man I had dabbled in black and white film photography. I had an old Rollei 35mm and developed my own film and prints. I enjoyed it and learned a little along the way. However, as life unfolded the time for photography became harder to find as other interests and responsibilities took priority.

So here I am some 25 odd years later re-visiting and re-learning with new tools. In October of 2011 I took to the streets with my camera in hand and started photographing strangers.

Your site is a great resource. Looking forward to becoming part of this community.

My name is Jesse. I live in New Jersey, around 20 west of Central Park, NYC. I worked in a “camera shop” (remember those?) all through college and fancied myself quite the proficient amateur. I could only pine for the latest toys. To give you an idea how old I am, I was working in the camera shop when the Nikon F3 came out and also Kodak 1000. Yeah, I know. It’s only now that I can finally get some decent equipment, particularly optics and strobe.

I’d been looking at Bruce Gilden vids on YouTube. Once I knew that my desired genre had a name – “Street Photography” – I came across your stuff. I really like your approach and outcomes. My sole objective is to take a photograph someday that is good enough that somebody else wants to buy it. I’m not in it for the money; I just want to experience some success in an artistic avocation before I’m done. Thanks for putting up the blog!

  • Charlie Barly

Hi Eric my Name is Charlie, and I’m from the UK Brighton area. Just turned 18 (28th nov) and am in love with street photography and have a shed full of books haha! The best thing I like about street photography is a special moment caught in a picture, which no-one else seems to notice.

Your blog could do with a lot of work….haha just kidding its awesome! look forward to more posts.

    Hi Everyone ,
I am raj currently in singapore , In the beginning i used to take lots of pics like Portraits,HDR etc…I really wanted to challenge myself towards something which is really challenging and courageous , i didn’t knew about street photography before , one day i decided to think deeply on how to become street photographer, although i wanted to be so the first question which came in my mind that how come they can take pictures of strangers without even asking them , don’t you think it’s too scary ?? , i had plenty of questions and Eric answered me all of them nicely….

…not only that there are plenty of opportunities like when you take picture, it must have a great concept or a story on what you shoot , i was really amazed when i saw eric pics , they were awesome and most of them are great…. it all depends on what you shoot and see things in a different way ……..

I didn’t know him before,i did lot of research on how to be a great street photographer, later i found him through google plus or other social networking sites like Facebook etc…and later i went through his site , read the article and also search some videos on youtube/vimeo.com , the most exciting thing i like was that he shared the video on how he take pictures while he was shooting on the street…(“”where you can find the videos :-”" just go to youtube and search his name Eric Kim …..you will get all his videos there…”") …

Later few days back , i heard that he was coming to singapore for Advance photography workshop and i wanted to meet him personally , i got in , although it was a last minute but thanks to eric , anyways i would just say that i enjoyed his workshop and learn a lot from him , i would just say that i was a beginner but the important thing is if you are really serious about street photography and if you need his help he will try his best to guide you ………

It was a pleasure meeting you Eric……he not only help me to guide me through the project on what i was working, but i also improve my lack of confidence…….on shooting the streets…..

Note :- I would highly recommend all the people who are new to street photography as well as who just got started with it…do follow Eric latest updates and go through his site , he is such a cool guy and if you have any queries about street photography , he will gladly help you and will reply you back …. but before that , if you have any questions please go through his blog first where you will get all the details on street photography………..

    Keep Shooting : ) ….

  • Pete Donohue

Hey there, Pete Donohue from Australia. I’m very new to street photography but I love it. Learning more and more every day and try to carry a camera everywhere I go. Hoping to get back to travelling sooner rather than later so even more opportunities to shoot!

Thanks again for the great site Eric, really helpful!

Wonderful to have you Pete. Keep in touch and keep shooting! :)

  • Adam

Hi, Adam from Texas. I shoot street scenes and architecture as part of my job (urban planner). I also shoot as a hobbyist when traveling and with family…I especially love capturing candid moments. Trying to improve my ability to capture the essence of a place and tell a story through photos has recently led me to take an interest in street photography. Your site has been very informative so far…it’s a nice blend of theory and practical information without being too esoteric or a vanilla “how-to” manual.

  • Dustin Roderick

Hey there! My name is Dustin, I live here in Denver Colorado. I went to the art institute for a short time, studying photography. I attended hoping to get a job shooting bands and-what-not. But had a Professor nudge me into the realm of Street Photos. I fell in love. I never thought It had a following I just loved when he assigned street shots. I was under the assumption it was a lost art. Got real caught up life, but just picked up an X-100, and looking at getting an M6 so I can mess around in both “worlds”. I stumbled upon this blog as I was reading into the X-100. Needless to say I was excited to find this site. I think my friends think I’m weird for liking street photography, haha.

  • http://twitter.com/JaeRos1 Jae Lennon

Hey y’all. I’m Jae all the way from the Philippines. I found out about your site from Danny Santos’ tweet, saw your link and finally stumbled here at your website. The thing that appeals to me about street photography is the candidness, urgency, the heartbeat you get when you need to take a shot. Another is that, it’s something instant, unplanned, and perfectly shows the reality of life from real life models. :)

Hi everyone! I’m Juliette from San Francisco, California. I don’t quite remember how I found out about your site, but, I do know that it was what inspired me to take on street photography! Street photography has always appealed to me, I just never had the guts to get out and start shooting. The one thing I love about it is the fact that there is always someone doing something quirky or interesting, waiting to be photographed (even if they don’t give you their consent). Checking your blog has become a part of my daily routine, I’m looking forward to what you’ll be uploading next! :)

  • André Zandoná

    Hello,

My name is André Zandoná and I hope this comment gets “out there” :) This is a post Eric wrote over two years ago but it seems like people have continued to introduce themselves so here I go:

Born and raised in São Paulo, Brazil, currently living in Northern California in the San Francisco Bay Area. I studied Molecular Biology at UCSD and am currently working on my Master’s Degree in Social Work (turns out I like working people and helping them more than working with cells that might someday help people)

My interest in Photography has been around since I was about 16. I started out with underwater film photography. I took a break from photography during college and in the years after my graduation but have picked it up again over the past three years and I AM LOVING EVERY “CLICK” since then.
